The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You're Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are by Brené Brown
The book covers how to foster attitudes like a wholehearted living, worthiness, self-compassion, authenticity, gratitude, resilience, courage, and stillness. It highlights accepting ourselves as we are and being enough with the shortcomings we may have by eliminating perfectionism. The book is short and easy to read. I highly recommend to read it.
Here are my lessons from this book.
- Wholehearted living. Embrace all your imperfections and vulnerabilities, eliminate the things that are holding you back, and cultivate the courage, gratitude, and compassion. It is like being grateful for what you don't have and feeling worthy of what you have.
- Compassion. To become compassionate, accept yourself and others with all their shortcomings and be patient with them.
- Courage. Have the courage to express yourself.
- Authenticity. Be authentic with yourself. Instead of chasing who you are supposed to be, accept yourself with all your weaknesses. Avoid having a belief that you are worthy only when you become somebody or achieve something. Keep on working with your pace and do your best.
- Avoid perfectionism and be good enough. Nothing is perfect in this world, do your best and leave the rest. There is always room for improvement, no one is perfect.
- Gratitude. Be truly grateful. Being grateful provides great inner peace.
- Resilience. Be persistent working on your goals, relationship, and dealing with people.
- Overcome uncertainties. Be patient with doubts and never let yourself be captured by it. There are a lot of risks in our life, no one knows what happens tomorrow. Have faith, do your best, and hope for good.
- Take a rest, know to play. Take a rest sometimes from the works that you usually do.
- Find meaningful work. Find out what is your favorite activity or job you want to do and work hard on it.
- Learn to be calm and still.
