Why Self-discipline is Important

“Life is like a play: it's not the length, but the
excellence of the acting that matters.”

―  Seneca

Self-discipline is an important trait to improve ourselves, to make our life more productive and healthy. I think a short definition of self-discipline is to control one's behavior by doing or not doing certain things for a given time. It is a tool to accomplish our goals and do what we need to do.

To accomplish a certain goal, one should act according to some rules that required for it. To be a writer, the person should write and read for specific hours each day for many years. The athlete needs to exercise specific hours every day, to keep his shape and improve his strength. The programmer should spend many years writing and testing the codes to be an expert in programming. Those practices require dedication, patience, and hard work. Ultimately, one should also stop doing unnecessary things, cutting or eliminating most of the practices that usually people say entertainment. Because mentally and physically the person can not do everything.

By practicing self-discipline, we can achieve:

  1. Better focus on tasks at hand.
  2. High performance and accomplishment capability.
  3. Expertise and better knowledge.
  4. Sefl control ability.
  5. Effective time management
  6. Better lifestyle.
  7. Financial independence.
  8. Physical fitness and strength in the body.
  9. Feeling of fulfillment
  10. Earning respect.

Here are some workable practices to improve the self-discipline:

  1. Set a written schedule for yourself including the item and time to spend.
  2. Check your progress every day. Have a spreadsheet and tick the items you have done every day.
  3. Do it anyway even if you don't want to do it. Count to zero or say "Back to work", "Now time to work" several times and start the task.
  4. Read more about the best practices of self-discipline, high performance, and productivity.
  5. Be with high performing and disciplined people or read about their life stories.
  6. Start from small and easy to do things. It can be to start reading from small books for 20 minutes a day. Eventually, you'll increase the time.

Everything starts from self-discipline so apply it into your life to enjoy its fruits later. You can start practicing a small discipline and slowly do more practice. If you master one discipline you can do another practice easily. Thank you for reading!
