Focus Leads to Action

Men are disturbed not by things, but by the view which they take of them.
~ Epictetus

   Our attention has the power to change the course we are in. Attention comes by remembering or thinking about the things we want to do. Simply remembering or reflecting on your wishes or goals for some period of time can be a thinking practice. By doing this practice regularly, we can guide our minds to produce new ideas, solutions, and methods of realization.

Deep focus

   A deep focus is a deliberate and goal-oriented engagement with the task at hand for long hours. The period is about a nonstop and distraction-free few hours. With this practice, we may sink into our thoughts and feel a 'flow' process. A flow is a full engagement with the process by disconnecting from the outer environment and feeling internal peace
   Deep focus or flow helps us to develop solutions, new ideas, understanding, and inspiration.

How to apply focus on your goals

   Let's say you want to learn a new skill. Below are the steps you can apply for its realization.

1. Write down your goal statement like;
  •    I acquire A skill by the end of 2019.
2. Think your statement in step #1 and ask several questions regarding your goal like;
  •  How can I accomplish it
  •  What is the best way to go
  •  What kind of resources do I need
  •  Who can help me or advise me on this?
  •  How many hours of practice are needed or how much time should I spend a day on this project

3. Get the first question of step #2 and think and write your answers.
  • I need to practice with Y and Z
  • I need to attend A course
  • I need to read B, C books.
  • and so on.
And do the same thing for each question above.

4. Get your answer in step #3 and it was "I need to read the book B". Now, you need to think about the book by asking the questions like below;
  • What are the best 5 ideas that I can learn from this book?
  • How can I apply those 5 ideas to my project?
  • What is the first chapter about, the second chapter, etc?
  • What are the lessons from the first chapter?
  • and so on.

5. While doing the practices in step #4 always reflect your answers, collect takeaway and how to apply those ideas into your project. Contemplate on the subject, try to connect the dots, and extract the key ideas.

   As you have seen, each step contains the question and answer. Confronting with the questions make us think about the answers, and they help us to govern our thought in one direction. Once we create the blueprint of actions in our minds, we can easily start doing it.  Our thoughts lead us to action.
   Based on the above exercise tips, try to practice to think about your goals and apply the above practices for their realization.
