On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King
I heard about Stephen King's 'On Writing' on Brian Johnson's PNTV channel and decided to read it. I think this book is for writers, especially for novel writers. The book contains mainly Steve King's life stories and his advices on writing. I think the main lesson from this book would be to become a good writer you need to read more and write more.
Here are some of the lessons I extracted from this book.
- Do not allow the denials to stop you. Whatever you do you may get a rejection from the people at the beginning, be ready to accept feedbacks positively, and keep working on your craft.
- Writing is for people, and they read what they want. Is your writing worth enough to read? Think about it.
- Find an isolated place to write. Shut down everything and just write and practice to write.
- To become a writer you need to read more and write more. Reading teaches you how to write. Every book has lessons to learn.
- Avoid using a passive verb in your sentences. Use adverbs when it is needed only.
- The poor book can also teach you by showing the mistakes that you need to avoid in your writing and the methods that you can write the same content in a much better way.
- Writing is about teaching yourself and others.
- Writing is not about wealth, fame, or getting respect, it is about joy and feeling good. Yes, you will be paid for your excellent work and you may become famous, but if you want to be rich, it is better to think about some other ways.
Thank you for reading!
