Takeaways: Ego Is the Enemy by Ryan Holiday

Pride, self-centered thinking, a feeling of being a perfect and better than the others are some of the elements of our ego. Those feelings may stop us from being a truly successful, a right master of our craft, and better human being in the long run. When calamity hits or success embraces us, our ego empowers us by false promises. Not to be trapped in those illusions, we should know how to control our ego and stay with our best selves.
Humbleness, humility, and self-awareness are the things that minimize the power of our ego. If you want to know about them, then I recommend reading "Ego Is The Enemy'. Ryan Holiday talks about ego, its harmful effects on us, and dealing with it appropriately in his book. Here are my some of the lessons from this book:

  • Talk less work more, put your effort into your practice rather than a showing of or making noise about it.
  • Be a student, never stop learning and absorbing knowledge. Being a student requires to be humble in front of someone who knows, and put yourself beneath to him.
  • Open your way by cleaning up the others way. Help others, and you will be helped.
  • Be not passioned about, but be purpose oriented. Chasing the goal, being ready whatever hardship comes along the way is the right approach.
  • Control yourself. In this life, there are times that others underestimate us, treat unfairly, label us with evil words, and etc. Our ego says that you are not deserved for this, fight back with them, show them who you are. However, a correct attitude in this situation would be to stay calm, keep doing your work, ignore the noises around you, and be steadfast in your position by swallowing your anger and controlling your temper. This attitude will be the right response, and by the time the real price will be given to everyone in this life.
  • Be aware of your pride. Taking pride in early accomplishments may spoil our hearts. A belief of self-satisfaction and an attitude of better than the others that combined in a pride may stop us from working hard, doing more, and moving forward.
