Lessons From The Book Drive by Daniel Pink

Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us
by Daniel H. Pink

The book explains the motivation factors and what can drive us to work. The importance of autonomy, mastery, and purpose to motivate ourselves and people around us are mentioned with the examples. I think it is a helpful reference to understand motivation factors and apply them to accomplish the goals.

The author explains three types of motivation:
  • The "Motivation 1.0" is based on the basic urges of human beings like eat and survive principle in prehistoric times.
  • Carrot and stick method, defined as "Motivation 2.0" worked well in industrial ages.
  • Working on higher goals that do not expect the money as the only outcome is defined as "Motivation 3.0"

Carrot and Stick

Carrot and Stick method is already outdated and it may not work well nowadays. Working for only rewards does not provide a long term success. This method diminishes our creativity and performance. It does not care about the final goal or long term perspective of the process. Cheating and being fake can also be possible in this method.

Type X and Type I

There are two types of characteristics that drive us to work.
  • Type X (Extrinsic) personality's main motivation might be limited just for earning money or some other rewards.
  • Type I (Intrinsic) personality works on more meaningful things. The process rather than the reward is more interesting to him.

Motivation 3.0

Autonomy, mastery, and motivation are the main factors in boosting intrinsic motivation and better engagement with the task at hand.
  • Autonomy. It defines self-control and individual responsibility toward the result. How you do the task, when you do it, how long you do are all the choice of the person.
  • Mastery. We have an urge to master and be skilled at something. This gives us the motivation to work hard and spend long hours for deliberate practice.
  • Purpose. It motivates us something meaningful toward the bigger goals rather than working for only bonuses or promotions.

The book is very interesting and it provides worthy ideas to learn. I highly recommend to read it.
