This book is about mastering the difficult skills, acquiring knowledge efficiently, or producing a better product with a deep working method. In his book, Cal Newport highlights the importance of deep working style with the examples and shows how to implement it in a study, craft making, or any other mental work. I highly recommend this book, you may find it here.
Some of my lessons from the book are:
  1. If you want to have an advantage in current society, make sure you have one of these things below.
    • Have an excellent skill with working complex technology.
    • Have top level expertise in your field.
    • Have access to capital.
  2. To learn complex subjects or acquire the hard skills efficiently, we need to work with a focus and deep concentration. High quality work comes from the time spent multiplied the level of focus intensity.
  3. Deliberate practice (engagement with the subject for long and non-stop hours) and distraction-free focus helps our brain to learn the knowledge better in a shorter time.
    • Myelin is a fatty tissue around the axons, it speeds up the transmission of nerve impulses. An extended period of distraction-free practice or work with a task at hand improves myelination process that is our brain works much better with a given task.
  4. Knowledge work can be categorized into deep work and shallow work types.
    • In a deep work, one should intensely focus on the task, eliminating all kind of distractions. It provides a high achievement and expertise on a skill that one is trying to acquire.
    • Shallow work is the opposite of deep work, a working method with more distractions and less focus. This type of work may not give an expected result at a given time.
  5. Deep work is a skill that can be developed. Implement below practices.
    • Allocate time to work.
    • Set a time limit or the number of items to finish.
    • Stay away from all kind of distractions (Internet, phone, people, etc.).
    • Know to stop entirely from your task after finishing it.
    • Make a habit of your work process.
  6. Deep work provides a better focus and an excellent problem-solving ability and gives more freedom. Three hours full engagement with the task might be equal to eight hours of work that completed with distractions and negligence.
